How to Use DDU for a Clean Graphics Driver Install (Fast & Easy Guide)

 Are you experiencing FPS drops, screen flickering, or upgrading to a new graphics card? Simply uninstalling your old drivers from the Control Panel often leaves behind residual files that cause performance issues.

To get the absolute best performance out of your new drivers, you need a completely clean slate. Here is the ultimate, quick-step guide to wiping your old NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel drivers using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU).

🛠️ Phase 1: Preparation (Do this first!)

Before we wipe anything, you need to have your files ready.

1. Download your new driver: Go to the official website (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel) and download the latest driver for your GPU. Save it to your Desktop.

2. Download DDU: Download the latest version of Display Driver Uninstaller for free from the official Guru3D website: 👉 Download DDU Here (Guru3D)

3. Extract DDU: Unzip the downloaded DDU file into a new folder on your Desktop.

4. Disconnect from the Internet! Crucial step. Unplug your ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi. This stops Windows Update from sneaking in a generic driver while you are trying to install the new one.

🚀 Step 1: Boot into Safe Mode

DDU works best when no other programs are interfering. You must run it in Safe Mode.

1. Click the Windows Start button.

2. Hold down the Shift key on your keyboard and click Restart.

3. Your PC will boot into a blue menu. Go to: Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings, and click Restart.

4. When the PC reboots, press 4 or F4 on your keyboard to Enable Safe Mode.

🧹 Step 2: Wipe the Old Drivers with DDU

Now that you are in Safe Mode (your screen might look low-resolution, which is normal), let's clean the system.

1. Open your DDU folder and run Display Driver Uninstaller.exe.

2. Close the initial options window if it pops up (the default settings are perfect).

3. On the right side of the main screen:

   • Select Device Type: Choose GPU.

   • Select Device: Choose your old card's brand (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel).

4. Click the top-left button that says Clean and restart.

DDU will now safely delete all hidden files, registry keys, and old driver folders. It takes about a minute, and your PC will automatically restart back into normal Windows.

💻 Step 3: Install the Better, New Driver

Your PC is now perfectly clean. Because you are still disconnected from the internet, Windows hasn't messed anything up!

1. Find the new driver installer you downloaded to your Desktop in Phase 1.

2. Double-click it and follow the on-screen instructions to install.

3. Once the installation is 100% complete, restart your PC one last time.
